Active Format Description (AFD) defines the area of interest or protected area in a MPEG-2 coded video. AFD along with pixel aspect ratio information coded in MPEG-2 video can be used to optimally present the video by making better use of 4:3 and 16:9 display areas. AFD information is carried as part of the MPEG-2 video 'User Data' information. DVB and ATSC broadcast standards require AFD information to be decoded and appropriately used.

Narlak Technologies AFD test streams with tester friendly video design and content makes testing easy, test results unambiguous and reduces the test cycle time.

    Test stream suite specification highlights

# All 16 AFD values including reserved and undefined are supported
# Video design with easily identifiable aspect ratio deformation
# MPEG-2 (SD) and H.264 (SD and HD) video formats covering all image resolutions
# MPEG-2 video with AFD values at sequence header, GOP header and picture header levels
# Onscreen expected output for 4:3 and 16:9 displays and other useful information presented

    AFD and video format transition test streams

Specialized test stream suites designed with dynamic AFD and video format attributes transitions present within a service/PID with transitions from or combination of any of the following;

# AFD value changes within a video PID along with encoded video resolution and aspect ratio.
# Changes in MPEG-2 user data insertion levels

  AFD Test Stream Suites delivery formats: MPEG-2 TS for DVB-T, DVB-T2, DVB-C, DVB-S and ATSC.
